Suffering from premenstrual, period or fertility problems? Then Acupuncture can help.
Endometriosis – The Common, Yet Under-Diagnosed Condition
Are we at the mercy of our hormones? Women’s health is dependent on good sex hormone regulation, but the maintenance of the natural hormone balance has never been more difficult due to the modern environment we live in.
Do your hormones seem out of balance with premenstrual, period or fertility problems? Or perhaps you need to support your fertility, as well as healthy skin, hair & nails?
You might need support for your female hormone balance.
Sex hormone regulation is a cornerstone of our physiology, behaviour, and ability to reproduce and thrive. During our reproductive years, the ovaries produce the majority of the sex hormones, like oestrogen and progesterone.
Oestrogen is one of the main sex hormones produced by women which is responsible for several functions, from regulating menstrual cycles, promoting sexual function, fertility and libido, to maintaining bone density, regulating fat stores, and supporting mood, memory, and learning.
Progesterone (aka “pregnancy hormone”) principally serves to facilitate and maintain a viable pregnancy and support embryonic development. It also serves other broader metabolic functions, from being the precursor to cortisol, aldosterone, testosterone, and oestrogen to supporting blood clotting, blood pressure and mood, and counterbalancing the proliferative, inflammatory effect of oestrogen.
WHAT CAN AFFECT OUR HORMONES?
Hormone regulation is a complex process and has its own natural rhythm. Firstly, we need to be adequately nourished, with sufficient intake of good quality carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Different nutrients, such as vitamins B5 and B6 are needed for hormone balance and regulation. Once these hormones have been used, we need to safely eliminate them from the body to avoid accumulation which can contribute to hormonal symptoms, inflammation, and free radical damage. This is managed by a complex detoxification system, and specifically sulphation, glucuronidation, and methylation processes, which require different nutrients, including N-acetyl cysteine, methylfolate and B12, as well as antioxidants such as those found in green tea or vitamins C & E.
Our modern lifestyle, stress, alcohol, toxic load from the environment, and high carbohydrate diet, can lead to a higher level of oestrogen and often decreased levels of progesterone. Such environmental burden, coupled with nutrient insufficiency, and genetic polymorphisms (COMT, MTHFR) can also make it difficult for the body to detoxify hormones efficiently. This can lead to a hormone imbalance and a number of hormonal symptoms.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
So, how can we support healthy hormones for optimum fertility, a balanced menstrual cycle, and general health? How can vitamins, plant extracts and other nutrients in supplements help? We’ve created a range of different supplements, and identified some key lifestyle tips, to support all these areas and help you optimise your hormone balance.
Reduce your exposure to ‘xenoestrogens’ (chemicals with oestrogenic effect):Use natural and organic cosmetics and avoid parabens, phthalates and other compounds that can act as hormone disruptors in the body.
Avoid storing food in plastic containers or using cling film which might contain BPA. Use glass, ceramic, or stainless steel for food and drink storage and microwaving.
Filter your water. You can install a water filter to the home mains water supply or use a countertop water filter such as the Berkey filter.
Manage your stress levels and improve sleep by using relaxation techniques; mindfulness, deep breathing and increasing your intake of magnesium and B vitamins.
Regular physical activity can help to reduce stress and reduce oestrogen levels.
Support detoxification of hormones and toxins by increasing your intake of green leafy vegetables (e.g. kale or broccoli), and having good quality sources of protein (e.g. eggs, pulses, oily fish).
Reduce your intake of stimulants and instead opt for herbal or green teas or water-filtered decaf coffee or herbal teas (green tea).
Reduce alcohol consumption as it can increase levels of free, unbound oestrogen.
Increase phytoestrogen intake from flaxseeds, sesame seeds, tofu and tempeh, which weakly bind to oestrogen receptors, blocking more stimulating types of oestrogen.
Increase your intake of prebiotic-rich foods such as oats, banana, Jerusalem artichoke, chicory, to support a good balance of bacteria and regular bowel movements.
Increase foods rich in magnesium (leafy greens, squash, pumpkin seeds, spinach, Swiss chard, sesame seeds, quinoa, black beans, cashews, sunflower seeds, daikon radish, cacao) and B vitamins (avocado, whole grains, liver, berries, green leafy veg, nuts, eggs, broccoli, cauliflower, daikon radish, mushrooms, salmon, meat, dairy) to reduce stress.
